The quarry lakes surrounding Gommern

The Recreational Area
„Plötzky - Pretzien – Dannigkow“
                                                                      
In the area surrounding Gommern,
quartzite and layers of clay were found
and extracted from numerous quarries.
The extracted quartzite was mainly used
to build the streets. Today none of the
quarries are in operation (the last quarry
was closed in 1963). Those quarries
which were not filled gathered water                                            
over time. Birches and pines as well
as massive rocks are reflected in their
waters. The marvellous location of the
almost 30 lakes has directly led
to the construction of weekend houses
on the lakes. Since the development of
the area in 1965 it has become a
successful recreational area. In addition                                   
to open-air swimming areas, campsites,
bungalow settlements, restaurants
and service areas have been built. The
average depth of the lakes is
approximately 20 to 30 m; nonetheless
swimming is at your own risk.
