History                                                                      

Gommern followed from a slavish settlement in
a rampart castle
which was placed on hill in the
Ehletal.  The water castle still exists today. Its keep,
designated in the vernacular as "onion tower", is
regarded as a landmark of the town.

 

 

 

948                  The first mention of Gommern was by Kaiser Otto I. in
                       a document for the creation
of  the diocese of Brandenburg

 

1269 - 1808      Was part of Saxon territory

 

1575                First mentioned as a borough i.e. a village with certain amount

                       of city rights

 

2nd. half           Development from a borough to a small market town

1808 - 1813      Canton Gommern in the Kingdom of Westphalia under Napoleon

 

after 1813         After a war of liberation against Napoleon Gommern was

                       represented in the Prussian Kingdom and finanlly established

                       by Wiener congress in 1815

 

Middle              The start of the industrial boom Even until after the 2nd world war

1951 - 1999      Downfall the quarry / mining industry and the Footwear industry

                       as well as dismantling of the sugar works as a reparation

                       payment, Settlement of the companies of the geological,

                       industry and of the development of Gommern as a centre

                       for the mineral oil natural gas industry in the former EAST

                       GERMANY Initiation of house building programm Development

                       of two new quarters Number of inhabitants increased to 7000

 

Today              Gommern ist a centre and "administration" seat of an community

                       - a small town in the Jerichow district
